Security Awareness and Crime Prevention Programs

Crime Prevention is a matter of personal responsibility!

The Campus Safety Escort Service

One campus crime prevention service available to students is the Newark Campus Safety Escort Program. At some point you may have some uneasiness when walking alone. This program can help reduce your anxiety. One of the campus security officers will be glad to accompany you and ensure that you are protected to your destination on campus. Arrangements can be made in advance or on the spot. From a campus phone, dial 237 to contact one of our officers. From a public phone, call 366-9237 or 366-9300 for emergencies.

The Campus Safety Escort Service serves all of Newark Campus students, faculty, and staff. Our goal is to offer an alternative to walking alone after dark. However, the service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We believe that safety is found in numbers, and should be available to all members of the Newark Campus community. Therefore, Newark Campus security personnel are pleased to escort any individual anywhere on campus property.

Background Checks/Fingerprinting Services

These services are available to OSU-N and COTC students (or perspective COTC students applying for specific academic programs).  Background checks cost $20.00.  Individual requesting these services must stop by Fees & Deposits, pay the $20.00 and return to the Public Safety office with the receipt and a valid driver's license or state ID.  Background checks are conducted between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Call 740-366-9237 for more information.

Why is the Campus Safety Escort Service a Safe Alternative to Walking Alone?

All Public Safety Department officers wear red uniform shirts with shields and carry identification badges. They are worn at all times so that you can easily identify our staff. Each escort will also carry a 2-way UHF radio to maintain contact with law enforcement dispatchers and other important agencies.

In order for your escort to easily identify you and document our activity, we respectfully request that you provide our friendly escort dispatcher with the following information when you call concerning an escort:

  • First and last name, current location, and phone number that you can be reached at, desired destination, brief personal description for easy identification, desired pick-up time.
  • We then will provide you with an estimated time of arrival for your escort.

If you have any questions, contact Public Safety at (740) 366-9237.

Engraving Personnel Property

Students and staff wishing to mark property such as calculators, laptops, cameras, etc., may utilize an electric engraver available at the Public Safety office in Hopewell Hall, room 122 or call extension 237 or (740) 366-9237 for additional information.

Lockers

Lockers may be rented from the Athletic Department during the year for individuals to secure their belongings. Other lockers, located at various places on campus, are available through the Learning Assistance Center, with priority is given to disabled students. Contact the Athletic Dept. at extension 245 or (740) 366-9245 OR the Learning Assistance Center at extension 246 or (740) 366-9246

Safety on Campus

Due to increased safety concerns on campus, skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, scooters, and roller shoes are prohibited on campus property. That means, these activities are prohibited anywhere on campus except the bike path. We have a significant handicapped population with limited mobility on campus. The safety of our students and staff, plus the liability associated with these activities are our main concern. Violators of this policy will be handled accordingly. Student offenders will be processed through judicial proceeding, if necessary, and the Newark PD will be contacted for general public offenders. No additional signage is planned. So, help get the word out and make Newark Campus safe for all.

Personal Services

Various organizations sponsor programs relating to rape and rape prevention, drug use and discrimination. Notices will be posted by Campus Security and other campus offices regarding crime awareness and prevention. The Student Support Services, personal counselors, or the campus ministry is always available to lend a supportive ear whenever you need someone to talk with. The OASIS Program provides pamphlets and information regarding rape education and prevention, safety tips and personal security. During each quarter, open forums are scheduled for the above items to make all students aware of their availability. In addition, each subject matter will be submitted to the Newark Campus: This Week for quarterly publication.
