Historic Highlights
1957
The Ohio State University at Newark administrative office opens on June 1.
Ohio State Newark first class sessions begin October 1. Classes are held in
the evening at Newark High School with 80 students and eight faculty members.
1960
Forty-six scholarships worth $12,000 awarded to students.
1962
October – Ohio State Newark enrollment reaches 289.
1965
The Ohio State University now refers to its regional campuses as academic
centers.
February 9 – Newark Board of Education allows Ohio State Newark to use the
new Newark High School for fall classes.
July 1 – Dr. Robert A. Barnes becomes full-time director of The Ohio State
University Newark Academic Center.
Newark Campus site selected by Ohio State; construction to begin in 1967 on a
125-acre tract of land between Granville and Sharon Valley Roads.
1966
Seven thousand Licking County residents pledge more than $1 million toward
the cost of land and construction of the first campus building.
1968
Founders Hall, construction at a cost of $3 million, is completed. Classes
are first held in Founders Hall on November 20.
1969
Founders Hall officially dedicated in a special ceremony on January 11.
Continuing Education Division founded shortly after the opening of Founders
Hall.
1971
Central Ohio Technical College opens and shares the campus with Ohio State
Newark.
1972
The Ohio State University at Newark receives full accreditation from the
North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
1975
Hopewell Hall opens.
1978
Adena Hall opens in the fall, containing both a gymnasium and a childcare
center.
1980
Dr. Julius Greenstein appointed Dean and Director of Ohio State Newark,
effective July 1.
1982 - 83
Ohio State Newark marks 25 years of service to the community.
The Ohio State University at Newark Citizens Council and the Newark Area
Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor a Silver Anniversary celebration of The Ohio
State University at Newark on Wednesday, April 20, in Adena Hall.
1986
Campus residence hall opens.
1988
Child Development Center built.
1993
LeFevre Hall opens – home to technical education, performing arts and faculty
offices.
1994
Dr. Rafael Cortada named Dean and Director/President.
The Everett D. Reese Carillon is dedicated on December 14.
1999
The Martha Grace Reese Amphitheatre opens.
2000
Dr. Anne Federlein is named President of the Newark Campus.
2004
Dr. William L. MacDonald is named Dean and Director of The Ohio State
University at Newark.
The John Gilbert Reese Center opens. This state-of-the-art educational
facility and conference center contains classrooms, a 600-seat auditorium,
ballroom, executive boardroom and a Cyber Café.
2006
The John L. and Christine Warner Library and Student Center groundbreaking.
This facility will feature 25,000 feet of library space. Anticipated completion
date of July 2008.
2007
The Ohio State University at Newark celebrates 50 years of education for
citizenship.
December 1 – a public gala celebrating Ohio State Newark’s 50th
anniversary will be held in the Reese Center.
